Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Scannibal mobile application ("the App"), developed by Kiran Rao ("we," "us," or "our"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms.

What Scannibal Does

Scannibal uses artificial intelligence to analyze photos of food, product labels, plants, and other items across its various scan modes. The App provides educational information about allergens, pet safety, skincare ingredients, supplement interactions, grocery labels, produce quality, and growing guides.

Important Disclaimers

Scannibal provides educational information only. It does not provide medical, nutritional, veterinary, or safety advice.

Specifically:

• Allergen analysis –€” Always confirm allergens directly with restaurant staff or the food manufacturer. AI analysis of menu photos cannot account for kitchen cross-contamination, recipe changes, or ingredients not visible in the image. Do not rely solely on Scannibal to make decisions about severe food allergies.
• Pet safety screening –€” If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) immediately. Do not wait for or rely solely on an AI assessment.
• Skincare ingredient analysis –€” Consult a dermatologist for skin conditions, allergies, or reactions. AI analysis is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
• Supplement interaction checking –€” Always consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist before starting, stopping, or changing any supplement, especially if you take prescription medications. AI analysis cannot replace professional medical judgment.
• Grocery label and expiration guidance –€” Expiration date education is informational only. Always inspect products before consuming them (check smell, texture, and container integrity). Scannibal will never tell you a product is "safe to eat" –€” that determination is yours to make.
• Produce quality assessment –€” Guidance on selecting produce is general in nature. Quality varies by region, season, and variety.
• Growing guides –€” Gardening, beekeeping, and chicken-keeping guidance is educational. Local regulations, climate conditions, and site-specific factors affect outcomes. Check local ordinances before keeping bees or chickens.

AI Limitations

Scannibal's analysis is generated by artificial intelligence. While we strive for accuracy, AI can make mistakes. It may misidentify items in photos, miss allergens or risks, or provide incomplete information. The quality of analysis depends in part on image clarity, lighting, and the information visible in the photo. You should always verify important safety information through authoritative sources.

Charitable Mission

Scannibal is built to give back. After operating costs — including Apple's platform fees, AI services, and hosting — remaining revenue from Supporter subscriptions is donated to charitable causes supporting hunger relief and animal welfare, through a donor-advised fund. Transparency reports documenting donations are published periodically. This is a voluntary commitment by the developer and does not create a legal obligation to any user or third party. Charitable recipients, donation amounts, and allocation may change over time at the developer's discretion.

Subscriptions and Payments

The App offers a free tier with a daily scan limit and an optional Supporter subscription with expanded features. Subscriptions are billed through Apple's App Store and are subject to Apple's terms and cancellation policies. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through your iPhone's Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to misuse the App, including attempting to circumvent rate limits, reverse-engineer the App, use automated tools to access the service, or use the App for any unlawful purpose.

Intellectual Property

The Scannibal name, design, and content are the intellectual property of Kiran Rao. You may share scan results generated by the App for personal, non-commercial purposes.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damages arising from your use of the App, including but not limited to: allergic reactions, pet injuries or illness, skin reactions, adverse supplement interactions, foodborne illness, or any other harm resulting from reliance on AI-generated analysis. The App is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States.
